GEORGE TOWN, August 11 — Penang police confirmed receiving 16 reports nationwide regarding incidents of the Malaysian flag, the Jalur Gemilang, being displayed upside down, with 12 cases reported in Penang and four from other states.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Police have arrested a local man in connection with the case.

The investigation paper will be referred to the Penang Deputy Public Prosecutor on August 11, 2025, with a recommendation for charges. Acting Penang Police Chief DCP Dato’ Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin stressed that the Royal Malaysia Police views the matter seriously and will take firm action against those found guilty.

The public is reminded to respect the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national sovereignty.
