GEORGE TOWN, August 13 — Artificial intelligence may place up to 600,000 jobs in Malaysia at risk, but it also presents new employment opportunities, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
Speaking at the 52nd ARTDO International Conference, he urged a shift from “worry to strategy,” highlighting that over 60 new job roles have been identified — 70 per cent of which are in the AI and tech sectors.
Sim stressed the need for upskilling and AI literacy to prepare the workforce for the evolving economy, pointing to roles such as “prompt engineers” as examples.
He said the ministry’s MyMahir portal will help Malaysians access training, while also noting that AI’s impact goes beyond technology, involving ethical and legal dimensions that require clear governance.
