GEORGE TOWN, August 14 — As food prices soar and health risks escalate, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) is calling for urgent nationwide action. With families now spending nearly one-third of their income on meals and Malaysia facing rising rates of diabetes, heart disease, and kidney failure.
CAP stresses that both government policy and household habits must change. It proposes a multi-agency approach, urging the Ministries of Education, Health, and Agriculture to promote cooking skills, healthy eating, and community food initiatives.
CAP also encourages Malaysian households to embrace home cooking, plan meals, reduce waste, and adopt frugal, health-conscious lifestyles. The association highlights that home-cooked meals not only reduce food spending but also help fight obesity and chronic diseases.
Through community gardens, rooftop farms, and digital food markets, CAP believes Malaysia can tackle food inflation while creating new opportunities for youth in sustainable agriculture.
