CYBERJAYA, August 14 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from two individuals over a viral social media video allegedly mocking the national anthem, “Negaraku.”
The statements were taken at MCMC’s headquarters in Cyberjaya on Aug 12, with one mobile phone and a SIM card seized for investigation. The case is being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, if convicted.
MCMC stressed it will not compromise on cases that demean the anthem, in line with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968. One of those involved, Malaysian influencer Choo Hao Ren, better known as “Haoren,” has issued a public apology after being seen in the video using his phone during the national anthem at an event.
The clip sparked widespread backlash, with Choo admitting he should have sung along respectfully. He expressed remorse and pledged to be more mindful in the future. The incident has drawn criticism from political figures, including Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, who urged punitive action, stressing that respect for “Negaraku” is a civic duty for all Malaysians.
Choo has previously faced controversy, including a 2021 brownface incident in a promotional video for a skin-whitening product, for which he also apologised.
