GEORGE TOWN, August 16 — Penang is positioning itself as a frontrunner in Malaysia’s digital economy, with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighting the state’s RM121 billion GDP contribution last year — 7 per cent of the national total — driven by strong performances in services (48 per cent) and manufacturing (46.5 per cent).
Speaking at the launch of AMD’s new 209,000 sq ft office at GBS by the Sea, Chow said the digital economy is projected to contribute 25.5 per cent to Malaysia’s GDP by year-end, with Penang well-placed to spearhead growth.
He lauded AMD’s long-standing presence and expansion in Penang, noting its partnership in talent development and recent memorandum with the Digital Ministry to provide Malaysian researchers free access to AI infrastructure.
Chow also pointed to the Agilent Lighthouse Celebration as further proof of Penang’s status as a sustainable global technology hub. Malaysian Investment Development Authority CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid praised AMD’s investment as a driver of high-quality jobs and a vibrant local-global innovation ecosystem.
AMD’s new facility forms part of the Penang IC Design and Digital Park under the Penang Silicon Design @ 5km+ initiative launched last year.
