GEORGE TOWN, August 16 — Penang police have launched an investigation into a viral Facebook video linked to an account named “Akmal Salleh,” following reports that the content contained hate speech capable of causing public unease and threatening public order.
The video, first reported on August 12 in Bukit Mertajam, allegedly featured remarks that authorities say could incite discord among the local community. The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
Initial inquiries by Penang police have since been handed over to the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT) at Bukit Aman as of August 15. So far, two police reports have been lodged by members of the public in Penang and Kedah over the matter.
Penang Police Chief CP Dato’ Ts. Azizee Bin Ismail confirmed that both reports are being investigated under the relevant legal provisions. He stressed that authorities view such incidents seriously and will take necessary measures to safeguard public harmony and security.
