As World Breastfeeding Week (August 1–7) approaches, attention turns not only to the health benefits of breastfeeding but also to the emotional burden often carried in silence by Malaysian mothers. While breastfeeding is praised for boosting infant health and bonding.

Many mothers face intense psychological challenges—ranging from guilt and isolation to anxiety triggered by low milk supply, pain, and lack of support. Despite strides in maternal health, mental wellness remains sidelined. Cultural stigma, inadequate maternity leave, outdated facilities, and limited workplace support contribute to emotional exhaustion.

Experts urge a more holistic approach—one that includes mental health screening, peer counselling, and breastfeeding-friendly environments—to ensure mothers receive the empathy and care they need.
