KUALA LUMPUR, August 20 — Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan announced that the government will expand the Sales and Service Tax (SST) instead of reinstating the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Aiming for a more targeted and progressive system that fairly distributes the tax burden, with revenue increases channelled into social aid programmes like STR and SARA.

He added that a carbon tax will be introduced in 2026, initially targeting the iron, steel, and energy sectors, as part of Malaysia’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
