GEORGE TOWN, August 22 – Cancer patients in Malaysia and neighbouring countries now have greater access to world-class treatment, following the official launch of Icon Oncology at Island Hospital, Penang. The centre is the result of a collaboration between Icon Sunsuria Sdn Bhd, Island Hospital, and Icon Group, supported by Sunsuria Berhad.
The initiative, officiated today by Penang Chief Minister YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, marks a major milestone in Malaysia’s healthcare journey. Since beginning operations in January 2024, Icon Oncology has combined global expertise with local insight to deliver patient-focused care. The centre is part of Icon Group’s global network of over 350 specialists across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, China, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia.
Partnering with Island Hospital’s internationally accredited facilities, the collaboration enhances access to multi-disciplinary cancer treatment, while Sunsuria Healthcare contributes deep local knowledge and community-driven vision. Among its early achievements is the launch of the Women’s Cancer Program, a tailored initiative designed to meet the unique medical and emotional needs of women navigating cancer.
With access to specialists in oncology, fertility, genetic testing, and psychosocial care, the program reflects the centre’s commitment to holistic, compassionate treatment. Plans are also underway to expand haematology services, including stem cell transplantation for blood cancers and non-cancerous disorders, alongside doubling treatment capacity.
The centre’s growth also reinforces Penang’s position as Malaysia’s leading hub for medical tourism. In his speech, Chief Minister Chow highlighted Penang’s strong healthcare ecosystem, which attracted more than 400,000 foreign patients in 2024. “This facility represents hope for families and strengthens Penang’s role in delivering world-class care,” he said.
With Icon, Island Hospital, and Sunsuria working together, Malaysia is set to redefine regional cancer care and bring treatment closer to home.
