TIANJIN, September 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were warmly received by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit 2025 Gala Dinner held at the Tianjin Meijiang Convention Centre on Sunday evening.
The event was hosted by Xi in his capacity as current Chair of the SCO ahead of the summit’s official opening tomorrow. Anwar, who arrived in Tianjin earlier in the evening for a four-day working visit to China, is set to attend the SCO Plus Summit tomorrow where he will deliver remarks as ASEAN chair.
His address will focus on strengthening ASEAN-SCO cooperation, particularly in trade, the economy, and regional connectivity, positioning Malaysia as a bridge between the two blocs. This year’s SCO Summit — the largest since its founding in 2001 — gathers member states including China, Russia, India, Iran, and Central Asian nations in Tianjin, China’s northern industrial hub and key port city.
Anwar is also scheduled to continue his visit in Beijing following the summit engagements.
