KUALA LUMPUR, September 1 – Transport Minister Anthony Loke has clarified that vehicle owners, including those with luxury cars, cannot avoid renewing their road tax by merely paying the RM300 fine under the Road Transport Act.
He stressed that all seized vehicles must have valid road tax before they can be released, countering claims that some drivers are exploiting the law to bypass proper renewal. Loke’s statement follows concerns raised by the Road Safety Expert Association (PPKJR).
Which highlighted that the outdated RM300 penalty fails to deter affluent motorists from committing the offence. The group warned that some view the fine as a routine payment, opting to pay it instead of renewing both road tax and insurance — a trend that undermines enforcement efforts.
