BATU KAWAN, September 1 — The 68th National Day parade in Penang saw a historic first today as the Warisan Tidak Ketara (Intangible Heritage) contingent joined the state-level celebration, themed “Towards UNESCO.”

Initiated by State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, the team highlighted Penang’s living cultural treasures, featuring the UNESCO-recognised Kebaya parade, Lion Dance and Chingay (currently under UNESCO nomination), and the state’s own Boria performance.

Wong said the participation was not only a patriotic display but also a cultural tourism strategy to position Penang as a world-class heritage destination. “Intangible heritage is both our collective memory and a high-value tourism asset.

By showcasing it on National Day, we strengthen cultural soft power while inviting the world to experience Penang’s identity,” he said, adding that the multi-ethnic participation underscored Malaysia’s diversity as a unique attraction for global visitors.
