PUTRAJAYA, September 2 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for a new, non-conventional strategy to combat drug abuse amid a worrying surge in synthetic drug use and online distribution methods.
Speaking at the opening of the 46th Malaysian Anti-Drug Association (Pemadam) general assembly, he acknowledged that despite over RM50 billion spent on prevention, enforcement, and treatment, drug abuse remains on the rise.
He urged agencies to prioritise two-way communication with youths, who make up 68% of drug abusers, and to adopt digital engagement instead of relying solely on traditional lectures and brochures.
Zahid proposed the creation of state-level digital communication teams, enhanced volunteer training modules, and the development of an integrated portal and smart application.
He also stressed the need for strategic partnerships with influencers and online communities to better connect with young people, warning that continued drug abuse could harm national productivity and deplete the country’s valuable workforce.
