KUALA LUMPUR, September 6 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that ASEAN’s strength lies in cooperation, solidarity, and autonomy, which have enabled the region to manage tensions, prevent conflict, and nurture prosperity since its founding in 1967.

Highlighting Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in mediating recent clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, he said the episode reaffirmed the association’s credibility as a custodian of peace and stability, rooted in consensus and open dialogue.

With Timor-Leste set to join as the 11th member, Anwar said ASEAN’s inclusivity and unity remain vital in a world increasingly defined by rivalries, protectionism, and economic fragmentation. He stressed that ASEAN must safeguard its autonomy by strengthening economic resilience, implementing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

And accelerating initiatives like the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework and ASEAN Power Grid. As the 47th ASEAN Summit approaches in October, Anwar urged member states to dismantle barriers, embed sustainability in the economic agenda, and expand global partnerships while revitalising platforms such as ZOPFAN and the East Asia Summit.

“We must shape our own future with courage, foresight, and solidarity,” he said, reaffirming ASEAN’s mission to remain a beacon of peace, prosperity, and progress.
