SHAH ALAM, September 7 — Bersatu’s annual general assembly descended into chaos last night when a scuffle broke out among supporters during party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s speech at the Ideal Convention Centre. The clash erupted shortly after Muhyiddin cautioned members against attempts to topple leaders through signature campaigns, stressing that such moves were unconstitutional and threatened party unity.
Calls of “letak jawatan, Muhyiddin” (resign, Muhyiddin) were met with counterchants of “Kekal presiden” (maintain the president), highlighting the widening rift within the party as it prepares for the 16th general election.
Muhyiddin, who urged delegates to remain disciplined and avoid becoming “agitators” that sow discord, warned that disunity could spell the downfall of Bersatu, just as it had for other parties in the past. He pressed members to strengthen solidarity ahead of the polls, framing victory for Perikatan Nasional as both a political and patriotic responsibility.
While he downplayed the scuffle in a press conference later, saying he would seek a report on the incident, the heated exchange underscored growing tensions in the party as it positions itself for a possible early general election.
