TAWAU, September 8 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil today launched the Mobile Integrated Radio and Internet Communication System (Prime) in Sabah to strengthen emergency communications during disasters, particularly in areas facing network disruptions.
Equipped with satellite, cellular networks, Wi-Fi, mobile radio and drone support, the vehicle-based system will allow rescue teams and agencies to respond more effectively when internet or phone lines are cut off.
Fahmi said the Sabah unit, the second after Peninsular Malaysia, will first be deployed in the Kalabakan constituency to aid communities without internet access while also supporting initiatives such as the Safe Internet Campaign, e-Health programmes and digital literacy efforts.
He added that the rollout reflects the government’s commitment to improving communication resilience in disaster zones, recalling that connectivity issues during the Batang Kali landslide hampered both rescue efforts and media reporting.
