GEORGE TOWN, September 9 — The Penang government will push ahead with the RM2.9 billion North Coast Paired Road (NCPR), a 10.61km project linking Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang that is set to cut travel time from up to 45 minutes during peak hours to just seven minutes.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the project, part of the long-delayed Three Main Roads and Tunnel package, includes an 8.41km land route and a 2.2km coastal viaduct, with construction slated to begin in 2026 and complete by 2031.

He stressed that the new road is crucial to easing congestion along Jalan Batu Ferringhi — the only existing route to Teluk Bahang — which often leaves residents, traders, tourists and even emergency services stranded in gridlock during holidays.

With RM500 million earmarked for land acquisition, Zairil said the project, led by Consortium Zenith Construction, would not only address safety and accessibility concerns but also unlock new socio-economic opportunities for Penang’s northern coastline, ensuring the state remains livable and competitive for future generations.
