GEORGE TOWN, September 12 — The Penang Port Commission (PPC) will soon require all 38 private jetties under its jurisdiction to apply for licences, in a move aimed at strengthening port regulations and safeguarding maritime security within Penang Port limits.

PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the initiative, carried out in collaboration with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), will involve proactive engagement with jetty owners to explain licensing requirements and operational guidelines.

He added that the process will also involve the Malaysian Customs Department and other government agencies to ensure comprehensive compliance, with engagement sessions planned to address the needs of jetty operators.

“PPC will continue to strengthen its role as a regulatory body to ensure smooth, safe, and compliant maritime operations,” Yeoh said, noting that most private jetties are used by fishermen while some handle commodities beyond seafood.
