ALOR SETAR, September 16 — Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) supreme council will convene next week to determine its candidate for Malaysia’s 11th prime minister, as PAS moves to assert its leadership within the coalition.
Coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said PAS, as PN’s largest party, holds the right to nominate candidates for both the premiership and the chairmanship, noting that the matter had already been raised at PAS’s muktamar and Bersatu’s general assembly.
The push comes after PAS Youth passed a motion urging the party to lead PN into the next general election, a call later endorsed by spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin. Addressing speculation of rifts between PAS and Bersatu.
Muhyiddin dismissed the claims, insisting that ties between the two remain “very close” and crediting their cooperation for PN’s electoral successes and united parliamentary front under Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
