PETALING JAYA, September 19 — Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has urged that the redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru in Kuala Lumpur be handled “carefully and prudently” with Malay interests placed at the forefront, noting that the area has been a vital symbol of Malay heritage and dignity since its establishment in 1899.
While not objecting to redevelopment, the Sultan said any plans must preserve Kampung Baru’s original history, heritage and long-standing role in the survival of the Malay community in the capital. Highlighting the area’s historical significance, Sultan Sharafuddin recalled Kampung Baru’s role in the 1946 Malay Congress that led to the founding of Umno, its place of refuge during the May 13, 1969 riots.
And its cultural landmarks such as the Sultan Sulaiman Club and Kampung Baru Jamek Mosque. Stressing that the enclave remains integral to Malay identity, he insisted that any redevelopment must consider both immediate and long-term interests of the Malays to safeguard its legacy for future generations.
