KUALA LUMPUR, September 23 — The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will not only improve connectivity but also serve as an economic catalyst through the development of logistics hubs and industrial parks under the Economic Accelerator Project (EAP) initiative, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
He stressed that the project is designed to attract investments, generate job opportunities, and uplift living standards in the East Coast region. Providing an update on the project’s progress, Tengku Zafrul said construction has reached 85 per cent as of July 2025, with Phase 1 slated for completion in January 2027.
He noted the breakthrough of the Genting tunnel — the longest rail tunnel in Southeast Asia — in July as a key milestone, adding that discussions with the project’s main contractor, China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC), are ongoing to ensure the ECRL delivers maximum economic benefits to the nation.
