PUTRAJAYA, September 24 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said applications to replace faulty MyKad chips have surged to about 40,000 after the government waived the RM10 replacement fee.

The exemption, effective from today until October 7, aims to ensure citizens’ identification cards function properly, particularly with the targeted RON95 fuel subsidy set to begin on September 30. He added that the government expects to bear costs of around RM714,660 under this initiative.

Saifuddin noted that National Registration Department counters are ready to extend operating hours if needed and that services remain smooth despite heavier crowds. During his visit to the NRD headquarters, he observed that many members of the public welcomed the initiative.

With most able to complete replacements within the same day. “The timeframe is sufficient for the public to take advantage of this opportunity,” he said, urging citizens to replace faulty-chip MyKad cards before the October 7 deadline.
