KUALA LUMPUR, October 3 — Digital travel platform Agoda has revealed a 22% surge in searches for Malaysia’s secondary destinations compared to 2023, reflecting travelers’ growing appetite for hidden gems over traditional hotspots.
The trend, highlighted ahead of World Tourism Day 2025 — which Malaysia is hosting — aligns with national efforts under the 13th Malaysia Plan to enhance regional tourism through investment zones, improved infrastructure, and sustainable practices in 43 identified emerging areas.
Agoda CEO Omri Morgenshtern said the rising appeal of these destinations creates opportunities to spread the tourism dollar more widely and uplift local economies. As part of its support, Agoda is helping rural properties transition to digital platforms and partnering with Destination Management Organizations to boost visibility.
To mark World Tourism Day, Agoda is launching a sales campaign from Sept 24 to Oct 8, offering up to 60% off hotel bookings, with flash sales of up to 70% off on Sept 27 and Oct 6, along with exclusive deals on flights and activities.
