KOTA KINABALU, October 6 — Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor today announced the dissolution of the 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly, paving the way for the 17th state election to be held within 60 days. He said the decision was made with the consent of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Musa Aman, following the assembly’s term which was due to end on November 11.
Speaking at a press conference in Kota Kinabalu, Hajiji said the dissolution allows Sabahans to exercise their democratic rights in choosing the next state government. The coming election is expected to be a high-stakes contest involving Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional, and Warisan.
Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) has named its deputy president Wetrom Bahanda as its chief minister candidate, while PN has hinted at a Sabahan candidate yet to be announced. Hajiji also noted that this could be his final election as chief minister.
