KUALA LUMPUR, October 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged that Malaysia’s education system place greater emphasis on values, ethics, and moral principles to address rising cases of misconduct among students.

He said the recent school rape case in Melaka underscores the urgent need to strengthen character development alongside academic learning. Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly, Anwar noted that weaknesses in the current system stem not only from schools but also from parental neglect and societal attitudes.

He stressed that education should go beyond academics to instil compassion, respect, and responsibility — values he said are essential to shaping a moral and disciplined generation.
