PUTRAJAYA, October 14 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has called on media outlets to exercise responsibility and ethics in reporting on the alleged sexual assault case involving secondary school students in Melaka.
The commission warned against publishing sensationalised or revealing content that could disrupt ongoing investigations or emotionally harm the victim, reminding media practitioners to comply with Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which prohibits the disclosure of a child victim’s identity.
MCMC also cautioned the public that sharing or distributing related videos or materials on social media is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The commission said it is working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and service providers to remove harmful content online.
The case, involving four 17-year-old students accused of assaulting a Form Three student at a school in Alor Gajah, has sparked nationwide concern, following reports that the incident was recorded and circulated before coming to light.
