PUTRAJAYA, October 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reaffirmed that Malaysia is not prepared to reintroduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST), citing ongoing financial leakages and low wage levels among citizens.
Speaking at the Finance Ministry’s monthly assembly, Anwar said that while GST is an efficient system, it would be morally unjust to impose additional taxes on those already struggling with poverty.
He emphasised that the government must first address corruption, improve income levels, and stabilise fiscal conditions before considering GST’s return, noting that Malaysia’s debt and deficit remain key priorities under Budget 2026.
