GEORGE TOWN, October 24 — The Penang Public Works Department (JKR) has ordered the full closure of P14 Jalan Tun Sardon from 6pm on October 23 to 6pm on October 25 following a series of landslides, fallen trees, and rockfalls triggered by heavy rain and strong winds.
The most critical incident occurred at KM5.10, where ongoing soil movement was detected, prompting immediate safety measures. JKR, together with the police, confirmed several other hazards along the route, including multiple fallen trees, open slopes, and rockfalls at various points between KM1.05 and KM5.00.
State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said investigations revealed that weather conditions were the main cause of the slope failures. Additional minor landslides were also reported across Penang since October 21, including in Pearl Hill, Jalan Paya Terubong, and Teluk Bahang.
A total of 31 fallen tree cases were handled by MBPP with assistance from BOMBA, APAM, and JKR teams. The public is urged to remain cautious, especially during heavy rain, and to report emergencies via MBPP’s hotline at 016-2004082, JKR’s disaster hotline at 03-26107727, or through the Pearl Apps platform.
