KUALA LUMPUR, October 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that schools must remain spaces dedicated to education and moral development, stressing that no event involving alcohol or gambling will be permitted on school premises, even after school hours.
Responding to a question in the Dewan Rakyat regarding claims that alcohol was served during an alumni reunion at a school in Ipoh, Anwar said the Education Ministry is reviewing existing regulations to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
Anwar clarified that the prohibition is not aimed at restricting the rights of non-Muslims but at upholding universal values and maintaining schools as institutions of learning. He emphasised that even when school halls are rented out to external groups, such as alumni associations.
They must still adhere to the principles and philosophy of the nation’s education system. “A school must remain a school, a place for learning and nurturing values,” he said, adding that stricter guidelines will soon be implemented by the Education Ministry.
