PUTRAJAYA, October 25 — The Cabinet has decided to maintain current regulations on the serving and consumption of alcohol in school premises, following public debate sparked by an alumni event at a secondary school in Ipoh last month.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the existing rules remain in effect, with the Education Ministry to provide further clarification — especially regarding Chinese schools, some of which operate under separate provisions as their halls are managed by school boards or private entities.

In a statement today, the Education Ministry confirmed that the Cabinet’s decision is consistent with past government policies, reaffirming that school programmes and fundraising activities must not involve or promote alcoholic beverages.

The ministry added that current practices in school halls run by School Management Boards and private institutions will remain unchanged. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier reiterated that alcohol-related events contradict the nation’s educational values and should not be held on school grounds, even outside school hours.
