KUALA LUMPUR, October 26 — Cambodia and Thailand are set to sign a landmark peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur today, marking a breakthrough in ASEAN-led diplomacy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced during the opening of the 47th ASEAN Summit.
Anwar said the pact demonstrates the enduring belief that dialogue and understanding can prevail, even amid uncertainty, and will serve as a testament to ASEAN’s commitment to regional peace and stability.
The agreement comes after Malaysia’s mediation efforts in July successfully de-escalated border tensions between the two neighbours following a five-day military confrontation. “
When Cambodia and Thailand sign their peace agreement here today, the world will see what conviction can achieve,” Anwar said, adding that reconciliation is “an act of courage.”
The signing, attended by regional and global leaders, underscores Malaysia’s ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability” and reaffirms the bloc’s growing role in conflict resolution.
