SEGAMAT, November 3 — Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching expressed confidence that the Malaysian Media Council’s (MMC) first annual general meeting (AGM) on November 7 will mark a milestone in strengthening media professionalism and freedom in the country.

She said the council is expected to play a greater role in establishing a formal dispute resolution mechanism and developing updated ethical guidelines to address modern challenges in journalism.

Teo added that following the inaugural AGM, MMC leaders will be elected by members rather than appointed by the government, allowing the council to operate independently and actively contribute to a stronger media ecosystem.

The AGM will also cover the election of board members, membership policies, operational procedures, and the 2026 budget in accordance with the Malaysian Media Council Act.
