KUALA LUMPUR, November 5 — Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Wee Meng Chee, popularly known as Namewee, has been remanded for six days to assist police in the ongoing murder investigation of Taiwanese social media influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, also known as Iris Hsieh.
The remand, granted by senior assistant registrar Muhammad Faisal Zulkifli, will last until November 10, confirmed Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam. Wee, 42, surrendered himself to police early this morning, stating his full cooperation with authorities after being sought in connection with Hsieh’s death at a Kuala Lumpur hotel on October 22.
The case, initially classified as sudden death, was reclassified as murder on Tuesday. Police previously arrested Wee at the same hotel, where they allegedly found nine blue pills suspected to be ecstasy; he later tested positive for several controlled substances but pleaded not guilty to related drug charges.
Investigations into Hsieh’s cause of death are ongoing, pending post-mortem and toxicology reports.
