BUTTERWORTH, November 11 — The Butterworth Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) station will undergo a RM30 million upgrade as part of the government’s plan to transform Penang Sentral into a fully integrated public transport hub, connecting rail, ferry, and future Light Rail Transit (LRT) services.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the project, under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan, is expected to commence soon with contractors to be appointed next month.
He explained that the redevelopment will enhance connectivity between KTM, ETS, and Komuter services with the ferry terminal and the upcoming Mutiara Line LRT, ensuring seamless travel between Penang island and Seberang Perai.
“This initiative will promote balanced development between the island and the mainland, making Penang Sentral the pulse of Seberang Perai’s growth,” said Loke, who also officiated the Penang DAP Annual Convention 2025 attended by DAP leaders Lim Guan Eng and Steven Sim.
He added that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the Penang government will also expand the Bayan Lepas air cargo terminal and develop a larger logistics site in Batu Maung, doubling air cargo capacity from three to six aircraft bays.
Loke said the RM16 billion Mutiara Line LRT — spanning 29.5 kilometres with 21 stations — will be a catalyst for Penang’s transport and economic development, supported by the airport expansion and the Butterworth station upgrade. “
These projects reflect the Federal Government’s strong commitment to making Penang a key industrial and transport hub for Malaysia and the wider Asia-Pacific region,” he said.
