BUKIT MERTAJAM, November 11 — DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has urged Penang DAP to begin early preparations for the possibility of simultaneous national and state elections next year, warning against complacency despite the state’s remaining term.
Speaking at the Penang DAP annual convention attended by 696 delegates, Loke said several states such as Johor, Melaka, and Sarawak will soon reach the end of their legislative terms, making next year a critical period. He added that if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim decides to hold the 16th General Election (GE16) together with state polls, Parliament could be dissolved earlier than expected.
Loke also reminded party members that unity and discipline remain key to maintaining public confidence, urging full support for Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim, who succeeded Chow Kon Yeow. “Voters despise disunity. Penang DAP’s strength lies in our unity and performance,” he said, while highlighting the state’s strong administrative record.
He further noted Penang’s robust economic growth and upcoming major infrastructure projects such as the Mutiara LRT, Penang International Airport expansion, and the Juru–Sungai Dua elevated expressway. “These are no longer dreams — they will become reality in the coming years,” Loke told delegates, calling on members to share the state’s progress and stay focused ahead of potential double polls.
