GEORGE TOWN, November 17 – In conjunction with World Diabetes Day on November 14, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has raised an urgent call for stronger public health measures to combat Malaysia’s alarming diabetes crisis, with the country recording the highest diabetes prevalence in Southeast Asia at 21.1% among adults — or 4.75 million cases in 2024.
CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader urged authorities to impose higher taxes on fast food, ban high fructose corn syrup, restrict junk food sales near schools, and mandate clearer sugar labelling, while encouraging Malaysians to adopt healthier lifestyles through balanced diets and regular exercise.
Highlighting this year’s global theme “Diabetes and Well-being” with a focus on workplace inclusion, CAP also called for greater understanding and support for employees living with diabetes, stressing that immediate collective action is crucial to curb the nation’s rising rates, reduce healthcare costs, and prevent premature deaths.
