GEORGE TOWN, November 19 – Penang state exco for health, youth, and sports Daniel Gooi Zi Sen has called on the media to adhere strictly to suicide reporting guidelines, warning that the coverage of one suicide case can trigger subsequent cases.
Speaking at a press conference during the launch of the dengue monitoring system ePintas, Gooi emphasized that mental health awareness, rather than physical barriers on bridges, is the key to preventing such incidents, as those intent on self-harm may find other means if underlying issues are not addressed.
He stressed the importance of promoting public awareness on mental health and providing accessible support, highlighting resources such as Befrienders, Talian Kasih, Talian BuddyBear, and the Mental Health Psychosocial Support Service.
Gooi urged journalists and the public to exercise caution and sensitivity, noting that responsible reporting and proactive mental health interventions can have a real impact in saving lives and supporting those in distress.
