GEORGE TOWN, November 20 – YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, highlighted the state’s progress in tourism and creative sectors during his recent winding-up speech, noting achievements in aviation connectivity, cultural promotion, and eco-tourism development.
Over the past two years, Penang has expanded direct international flights to 20 cities, including Dubai, Shanghai, and Chengdu, with additional charter services to Kunming, Haikou, Xian, and Chongqing, supporting Malaysia’s upcoming 2026 Visit Malaysia Year and Medical Tourism initiatives.
Meanwhile, the state continues to diversify tourism beyond George Town, developing eco-tourism hotspots in Balik Pulau, Teluk Bahang, and Seberang Perai, complemented by infrastructure projects such as signage at Kampung Labuh Banting and interactive promotions at the Butterworth Fringe Festival.
Cultural and heritage initiatives were also emphasised, with Wong addressing heritage village nominations, mural guidelines in George Town, and global representation through events like Chingay performances in Singapore and collaborations with Quanzhou College of Technology, China.
Penang’s arts sector has gained international exposure through partnerships at the Osaka World Expo and regional arts festivals, while local events such as the Penang International Dragon Boat Festival and Pesta Pulau Pinang continue to draw tourists, with future iterations adjusted to accommodate LRT development.
Infrastructure enhancements are ongoing, including the RM52 million upgrade of Dewan Sri Pinang and the RM30 million improvement of KTM Butterworth station, strengthening Penang Sentral as a northern transport hub.
Wong reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to positioning Penang as a leading regional tourism destination, leveraging digital platforms like the upgraded myPenang portal and social media channels to maximise engagement, reach, and visitor experience.
