Google has announced a major breakthrough for cross-platform connectivity with the launch of full interoperability between Android’s Quick Share and Apple’s AirDrop, beginning with the Pixel 10 series.
The new feature allows users to directly transfer photos, videos, and files between Android and Apple devices using a secure, peer-to-peer connection that does not route data through any server.
Apple did not collaborate on the system, with Google confirming it built the interoperability layer independently using Rust and validated it through internal reviews and third-party penetration testing by NetSPI, which deemed the solution secure and “notably stronger” than other industry implementations.
Android users will see nearby Apple devices appear in Quick Share when AirDrop’s “Everyone for 10 minutes” mode is active, while iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will similarly be able to detect nearby Android devices.
The feature reflects Google’s ongoing push for better cross-platform compatibility—which has recently included RCS messaging and unknown tracker alerts—and is expected to expand beyond the Pixel 10 lineup to more Android devices in the near future.
