GEORGE TOWN, November 21 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today confirmed that the long-delayed Butterworth foreshore reclamation project at Pantai Bersih has been officially cancelled, with the state terminating its concession on May 31.
And issuing a formal notice on September 22 after Rayston Consortium (Butterworth) Sdn Bhd failed to demonstrate the viability of its 582ha reclamation plan, citing escalating costs, shifting site parameters due to port expansion, and height restrictions imposed by the Air Force.
Chow stressed that no sand or physical works had ever begun before the agreement was revoked, but noted that the state remains open to fresh proposals for the Bagan Ajam–Teluk Air Tawar coastline from companies with proven technical expertise and financial strength.
Bringing to a close a project first mooted in 1999 and intermittently revived over the past two decades.
