GEORGE TOWN, November 27 – A powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The tremor occurred at a depth of 16 miles and, while no tsunami threat was issued by the Indonesia Tsunami Warning Center.
The earthquake was reportedly strong enough for some residents in George Town, Penang, to feel light shaking in their homes and offices. Authorities confirmed there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage in Indonesia or Malaysia.
The earthquake underscores Indonesia’s location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region prone to frequent seismic activity, and serves as a reminder of the need for preparedness even in areas outside the epicentre.
