KUALA LUMPUR, November 27 – Bagan Datuk, Perak, an area historically free from flooding, has been inundated due to unusually heavy rains, prompting Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to mobilise 9,800 personnel and 7,000 operational assets nationwide to tackle the disaster.

The government has also deployed modular steel panel bridges, known as Bailey bridges, to ensure connectivity in flood-affected areas, with temporary relief centres (PPS) ready to accommodate over 2 million evacuees.

Ahmad Zahid, who chairs the Central Disaster Management Committee, highlighted that 188 PPS have been activated nationwide, currently housing about 22,000 flood victims, including residents of his own village in Bagan Datuk.

He urged all agencies to remain vigilant as northern Peninsular Malaysia and the east coast experience unprecedented rainfall, while authorities in Sabah also reported landslides at Jalan Bukit Bendera Upper, reflecting the broader regional impact of extreme weather conditions.
