GEORGE TOWN, November 28 — The Penang government confirmed that construction of the Mutiara Line LRT will begin in January 2026 without delay and continue even during Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, with state exco Zairil Khir Johari stressing that the project cannot afford interruptions due to a tight timeline to meet its December 2031 completion target and to avoid contractual penalties.
He said the approved Traffic Management Plan (TMP), covering all 20 station locations from George Town to Permatang Damar Laut, will be implemented in stages to manage congestion at key hotspots, including Magazine Road, Sunny Point, Batu Uban and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, ensuring traffic flow and safety during peak festive travel.
Zairil added that MRT Corp and SRS Consortium will enforce mitigation measures, provide alternative routes and issue real-time traffic updates, with the TMP to be continuously reviewed until its full implementation by 2030; motorists are encouraged to follow the Mutiara Line website, social media channels and navigation apps like Waze for the latest construction and traffic information.
