GEORGE TOWN, November 28 — Penang’s dragon boat heritage stretches back nearly seven decades, beginning with the world’s first international-level race held in 1956 to commemorate George Town’s centennial.
The state’s prominence in the sport grew rapidly, leading to its inaugural Penang International Dragon Boat Festival in 1979, which drew 66 teams from across Asia and cemented Penang as a major hub for dragon boat racing. For years, the iconic Gurney Drive waterfront was the heart of the festival, where thousands of spectators gathered along the promenade to cheer on teams from around the world.

As coastal changes and water quality at Gurney Drive declined in the early 2000s, the race found a new home at the Teluk Bahang Dam — a venue that later alternated with Mengkuang Dam, Batu Uban’s marine base and the Sungai Pinang promenade.
Despite these shifts, Penang continued to attract strong international participation, though the mid-year race was eventually discontinued as global teams prioritised events in China and Hong Kong. The state refocused its efforts on the year-end regatta, a strategy that revived interest and stabilised attendance.

Last year, the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta (PIDBR) made a landmark move to Straits Quay, offering a scenic racecourse with modern amenities, retail access, and easier viewing for spectators. The relocation proved successful, and this year’s edition, taking place from November 28 to 30, will host more than 54 teams and 1,600 athletes from over 11 countries and regions.
Notably, the 2025 regatta also welcomes para-dragon boat teams from Hong Kong and the Philippines, further expanding its inclusivity and international appeal. With participants already arriving in Penang and excitement building along Tanjung Tokong’s waterfront.

The PIDBR continues to evolve while honouring the island’s deep cultural roots, from legendary tales tied to the Duan Wu Festival to the decades-long passion of local athletes who once raced along Gurney Drive’s golden coastline.
