KUALA LUMPUR, December 7 – MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has signalled that the party may chart its own path if Barisan Nasional (BN) partners — particularly Umno — continue cooperating with DAP and Pakatan Harapan in the next general election, saying such an alliance would show that the “Barisan spirit” has disappeared.
Wee reiterated that MCA’s stance is firm in rejecting any cooperation with DAP, and warned that backing contentious policies such as the proposed Urban Renewal Bill could further erode BN’s credibility and even destabilise Umno.
Despite suggestions for MCA to join Perikatan Nasional, Wee said this is unlikely unless PAS undergoes significant reforms to become more moderate and acceptable to non-Muslim voters.
The party’s internal tensions were further highlighted when former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker criticised Wee for focusing too heavily on attacking DAP during the party’s general assembly rather than addressing MCA’s future direction and succession planning.
Ti said delegates were hoping for clarity on the party’s next leadership transition ahead of Wee’s term limit in 2027, noting that MCA’s electoral presence remains weak nationwide.
With both MCA and MIC openly reassessing their roles in BN amid dissatisfaction with their influence in the Unity Government, the coalition faces growing internal uncertainty as it heads towards the next general election.
