GEORGE TOWN, December 16 – Road users in Bandar Baru Air Itam are advised to plan ahead and use alternative routes as night road closures will be implemented to facilitate beam launching works for the Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Bypass beginning December 18.
The works involve the installation of 18 beams across three spans at the busy intersection of Lebuhraya Thean Tek, Jalan Thean Tek and Jalan Angsana, requiring the movement of heavy machinery and large cranes during off-peak hours.
Paya Terubong assemblyman YB Wong Hon Wai said the temporary closures are necessary to ensure the safety of road users and construction workers, as the beam mounting process involves large cranes and heavy equipment operating within the middle of the intersection. He noted that carrying out the works at night would help minimise traffic disruption during peak hours.
According to Wong, once the installation of the beams is completed, Section 1 of the Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Bypass will be about 97 per cent complete, marking a significant milestone for the long-awaited infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion in the central and southern parts of Penang.

Also present at the media briefing were Penang Infrastructure Corporation project director Sarimah Ahmad and her team, who presented detailed slides on traffic flow diversions and alternative routes, while authorities apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the construction period.
