BUTTERWORTH, December 22 — Barisan Nasional (BN) will push for the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) after the 16th General Election (GE16), describing it as the most effective and fairest tax regime for Malaysia, BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

While reaffirming BN’s long-term stance, Zahid said the coalition is prepared to allow the Sales and Services Tax (SST) to continue for now, noting there are still two years remaining before GE16.

Speaking at the 17th Annual General Meeting of the Makkal Sakti party, Zahid said GST enables more efficient revenue collection and fairer distribution across all income groups, allowing the government to channel greater allocations back to the people.

He added that although Malaysia reverted to SST in 2018 following political commitments, BN remains convinced that GST is the best system, citing its widespread adoption globally as proof of its effectiveness.
