GEORGE TOWN, December 27 – Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has responded to concerns raised by the Penang Public Transport Users Association regarding traffic congestion and the Penang Hill Free Shuttle Service, stressing that the initiative is a targeted, temporary measure aimed at easing congestion during peak periods such as school holidays and festive seasons.

PHC said the free shuttle, introduced in 2023 following repeated public feedback, encourages visitors to leave private vehicles behind and use public transport, helping to reduce traffic in the Air Itam area, limit disruption to residents, and improve overall visitor access to Penang Hill.

PHC explained that the shuttle service is sponsored by the corporation in collaboration with Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd and supported by the Penang State Government, with no increase in the number of buses deployed to ensure regular public bus services remain unaffected.

Operated only on selected high-demand days, the service utilises spare buses and is closely monitored to remain cost-effective and non-permanent. PHC added that the initiative reflects its broader commitment to responsible destination management, environmental sustainability, and maintaining Penang’s reputation as a visitor-friendly tourism destination.

Meanwhile, PHC has confirmed that the Penang Hill Funicular Service has resumed normal operations following a minor disruption. The corporation expressed appreciation to visitors and stakeholders for their patience and understanding, and apologised for any inconvenience caused, reaffirming its commitment to continuous improvement while balancing visitor needs with community wellbeing.
