GEORGE TOWN, December 27 — The Penang Hill Funicular Service has resumed normal operations after a temporary disruption on Friday afternoon caused by a power distribution issue affecting the motor drive. Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said the disruption occurred at about 2.15pm on Dec 26 after a foreign object affected the high-voltage power unit, triggering the system’s built-in safety mechanism.
As a precaution, the funicular operated at reduced speed to safely clear visitors before the system was powered down for repairs. PHC prioritised visitor safety by arranging transport back to the Penang Hill Lower Station using both funicular coaches operating at reduced speed and the Penang Hill Jeep Service, while technical teams carried out a thorough inspection of the system.
Following the replacement of the affected power unit and completion of safety checks, the funicular service resumed full operations at 6.30pm. PHC apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked visitors and stakeholders for their patience and understanding during the incident.
The corporation also expressed appreciation to the Royal Malaysia Police, Penang Hill Police Station, Penang Hill Jeep Service Drivers Association, the Penang Island City Council Traffic Unit and other agencies for their assistance, reaffirming its commitment to the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.
