KUALA LUMPUR, December 30 — Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has announced his decision to resign as Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), effective January 1, 2026.
In a media statement dated December 30, Muhyiddin expressed his appreciation to the PN leadership for their full support during his five-year tenure since the coalition’s formation, and wished the PN leadership and its component parties continued success.
The resignation was confirmed by Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and party information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz. Muhyiddin reportedly conveyed his decision via the Bersatu Supreme Leadership Council WhatsApp group at about 10.30pm.
While no official reason was given, sources said Muhyiddin will continue to serve as Bersatu president and focus on the Ikatan Prihatin Rakyat initiative. Muhyiddin’s departure comes amid heightened tensions between Bersatu and PAS following the recent political developments in Perlis.
